Keyhole surgery, or minimally invasive surgery, is another name for it. It is a type of surgical procedure that allows a surgeon to access the inside abdomen and pelvis without cutting a large amount of skin. During laparoscopy, the surgeon uses a device called a Laparoscope to avoid the greater region of the incision. A laparoscope is a tiny tube-like instrument that contains a camera that displays images of the inside of the abdomen or pelvis on a monitor screen.

After the operation, it gives less pain and bleeding.

It also reduces the chances of being scared.

When laparoscopy is recommended:

It is recommended to diagnose the problems that develop inside the abdomen or pelvis. It is also helpful to carry out surgical procedures i.e., removing a damaged or diseased organ or removing a tissue sample for further testing.

Laparoscopy is most commonly used in the study and treatment of the following:

Urology: Conditions affecting the urinary system.

Gastroenterology: Conditions affecting the digestive system.

Gynecology: Condition affecting the female reproductive system.

Procedure of laparoscopy:

It is carried out under anesthetic so that a person won’t feel any pain during the whole process.

The surgeon makes one or more incisions in the abdomen during the procedure. This allows the surgeon to insert a laparoscope, small surgical tool &tube used to pump the gas into the abdomen.

The gas is then released from the abdomen, and the incision is closed with stitches and a bandage. The patient may go home on the same day, but it is recommended to stay in the hospital overnight.

  • MYTH: If a person has undergone multiple abdominal surgeries in the past, can’t opt for a laparoscopy
  • FACT: The truth is that you can have a laparoscopy even if you’ve had numerous procedures in the past, regardless of the location or size of the previous incision.
  • MYTH: If you are obese or underweight, you can’t go for this surgery.
  • FACT: It does not matter that whether you are obese or too thin, you can still go for the surgery as the tools used are available in different sizes. As in obese people, there are much lesser chances of infection as compared to open surgery.
  • MYTH: Laparoscopic process is longer than open surgeries, the chances of anesthesia exposure increases.
  • FACT: When the procedure is performed under experienced surgeons, it can be as quick and safe as open surgeries. Even if the procedure took a long time the additional exposure to anesthesia will not harm.

Conditions that laparoscopy address:

It is used to remove the gallbladder and appendix.

It is used to repair different types of hernia.

In an ectopic pregnancy, inflammatory disorders are generally treated by this process.
